Apologies for all the questions.  Is the large widget area under the news ticker?  When I change categories, it does not change.  I've tried deleting widget and adding and clearing cache, but I cannot get the category to change.  I can't figure out what I'm doing or not doing correctly.

Checked feature on featured slider.  That may have done it.  

Sorry - yes.  I was just letting you know that I had to check this option to have slider appear.
