I am trying to upload the demo xml using wordpress import plugin on Godaddy managed wordpress. I keep getting the 500 internal server error. is this something you guys are aware of and how can I resolve this asap?
I think you should contact your hosting provider support about that, there might be an upload limit or some other php setting on their end that is causing this. Unlikely to be theme (or file) related as it has been imported hundreds of times already.

I had a similar problem!
in my case upgrading from 64MB memory_limit to 256 MB php memory_limit solved this issue
