please check the included documentation also. For sliders to appear you need to set you homepage not to be a page but to show latest posts in Settings > Reading, and set the widgetized homepage in Theme Options > Basic Settings. Then fill the homepage sidebars with the desired widgets, preferably the ones starting with HPwhich are specific for the homepage.
unfortunately that is not possible without some personal customizations to the code. By default, the vertical carousel will display the latest 5 posts with a featured image set.
