I tried your custom css modifying instructions. But, no matter what I do trying to expand the carousel to only have a small area between it and the slider it moves it under the slider. How can I expand the carousel or, the slider to fill the yellow highlighted area (see screenshot)
What custom CSS are you referring to? Is it something I provided? That space is the minimum padding required between items and it's part of the grid framework the theme uses (Bootstrap). I don't recommend removing it as it would look bad.
If you remove the vertical carousel though, the slider will take the full container width.
